Alaska Fishing Trip - Kenai Peninsula (July 2005)

In July 2005, my good friend Mike and I embarked on a spectacular fishing trip to Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. We fished the world famous Kenai & Russian Rivers which boasts the largest King (Coho) Salmon ever caught. Mike and I have been friends since the age of 5 and grew up 3 houses away from each other. We spent a lot of our time at the nearby golf course fishing for blue gill in the ponds. Needless to say, the fish we were going for on this trip were on steroids compared to the little guys back home. Mike and I continue to enjoy fishing and hanging out with each other and I don't believe that will ever change. He's a good friend and a great man.
The only camera I had at the time was a 1980's Canon that my grandmother gave me years ago (non digital, no auto focus, virtually manual everything). I took that camera all over Yellowstone & Alaska in 1992 and 1993. It served me well for so many years.... I also had a small Sony Handycam digital camera and that really turned out to be useful, especially on the float plane trip to wolverine creek where we witnessed the Grizzly and cubs. We were on a boat, in pouring rain and I couldn't afford to get my canon soaked. Some of the grizzly pictures of that trip (including the "posing on a rock" one) were captured with this small sony digital with a ziploc bag over it. Enjoy!

Russian River Reds

  • Time to have them filleted. After that, we took them to the processing plant down the street to have them vacuum sealed and frozen.
  • My first RED (sawkeye) caught on the Russian river!

  • A picture up river from where we were fishing......Many fishermen on this river. It's one of the most popular spots in the world for salmon fishing.
  • Michael carved out a nice piece of Russian River real estate for the day
  • A picture down river from where we were fishing.....Notice the tree on the left and the people just beyond it. For some reason these people scattered right after this shot.....
  • ....BEAR! A grizzly cub (probably 2 yrs.) came down to the river about 50 yards from us (notice the tree from the prior picture). The cub took a fish that one of the fishermen caught.
  • Another cub gets into the action. Notice the first cub has a nice salmon in its mouth. The other cub is looking for something to eat.....
  • ....and under the tree was a nice sandwich resting in a backpack for the bear to take. The people that owned the bag were near me wondering if their lunch was going to be there after the bear left. Hardly! Another note: I turned to tell Michael that I was getting some cool pictures and noticed he bolted 1000 yards down river with our fish!
  • When the cubs left, I climbed the river bank to see if I could find their mother. I caught the mother in the tree line with one of the cubs next to her (there were 3 cubs in total). Notice the size difference! I'm glad she didn't come down by us. They wound up going down river and mangling another fisherman's backpack that had food in it. Then they took it into the forest. I'm not sure the guy went after it.
